Colorful, upbeat dining room serving Mexican meals, many from family recipes, since 1969.
From humble beginnings in the gulf city of Merida, Yucatan, Augusto "Cuco" Salazar Sr. departed from Mexico to the United States with nothing more than a suitcase, a passport and $100. In 1969, he opened a small beer lounge and then opened the first Don Cuco in Toluca Lake. With many old family recipes from Yucatan and a commitment to excellent service, Don Cuco has been a staple of Southern California´s Mexican dining scene.

My Friend and I are visiting from Tennessee and stayed next door to Don Cucos at the Tangerine. They recommended this restaurant and im so glad they did! The chicken quesadilla was my choice, fish tacos for my friend who said they were the best she ever had! It was delicious & portions were generous! We returned again during our 8 nite stay and were not disappointed!!! Service was quick and excellent as well. Guacamole also very fresh! 10 out of 10 in my opinion! Patio seating was also a plus!

I visited Don Cuco's twice in the same week. Unfortunately the second visit ruined what should have been a great memory. My first visit, I ordered a shrimp quesadilla. It was made so wonderfully. Plump large shrimp with cheese melted from end to end of the quesadilla. The second visit, I wasn't sure if the cook thought he was making a taquito, because everything was rolled in the middle and I was left with big flaps of dried quesadilla. It was slapped together so badly I wondered if I inconvenienced the chef. I was so disappointed with the teaspoon of guacamole I was given. I pointed this out to my server. Thank goodness I did not order a side as I can imagine if it would be equal size. My friend ordered chicken fajita, as she did last week. It was atrocious. When she ordered her fajita last week, she remarked the slices were grilled and seasoned well. This time, she received pieces of tasteless chicken cut and thrown on the grill. I guess the original cook was out of town. Even the margaritas were horrible. I'm not sure what house tequila they use, but it was horrible. Don Cuco's is a long-standing neighborhood restaurant. I had been there many times in the past. My guest likes Mexican food, and was really happy from our first visit. Sometimes a second visit at the same place is not the best choice

Food is AMAZING!!! A-M-A-Z-I-N-G We went around 4PM for an early dinner. It wasn’t crowded. It took FOREVER for anyone to come to our table. Finally, a gentleman brought is chips and salsa then rushed off. I started keeping track of time at this point. Another 20 minutes goes by and I manage to snag the gentlemen who brought us the chips (basket still had plenty of chips) asked for more salsa and he took the chips away! Ugh! I’m starving and eating those chips. Another 20 minutes, he brings back a new basket of chips and salsa. We’ve been there over an hour at this point without our order taken. Mind you, it’s so dark that I had to use a flashlight to read the menu. Our server comes by and says, “Thank you for waiting. I’ll be right back!” Ugh again! 🤣 15 minutes later he comes back to ask if we want drinks. I said no and began to give him my order. He asked me to wait just a second, that he’d get our drinks and the take our order. ANOTHER 20 minutes!!!!!! Placed our order, our food came to the table rather quickly and was delicious!Waited forever for the check, too. Bottom line, go to the bar and get your own drinks, take them to your table. Get two ‘cause you’ll be waiting a while, but this will shave about 30 minutes off of your visit. If you are going to hang out all night and have great food and drinks, you’ll be fine, but this is definitely not the place to pop in for a lovely, quick dinner. I will go again, because the food is so good. I’ll be prepared to wait FOREVER for service.
